Generating “Good” Musical Rhythms Algorithmically

چکیده

While it is difficult to define precisely what makes a “good” rhythm good, it is not hard to specify properties that contribute to a rhythm’s goodness. One such property is that the mirrorsymmetric transformation of the rhythm about some axis of the rhythm’s cycle, represented as a circle, be the same as its complementary rhythm. Rhythms that have this property are called interlocking reflection rhythms. Another family of rhythms termed toggle rhythms are those cyclic rhythms that when played using the alternating-hands method, have their onsets in one cycle divided into two consecutive sets such that first set is played consecutively with one hand, and the second set is played consecutively with the other hand. Several simple rhythmgeneration methods that yield good rhythm timelines with these properties are presented and illustrated with examples.

Score Generation with L-Systems

A new method for algorithmically generating musical scores is presented and illustrated with examples. The idea is to produce a string of symbols using an L−system, and to interpret this string as a sequence of notes. The proposed musical interpretation of L−systems is closely related to their graphical interpretation, which in turn associates L−systems to fractals.

A Memetic Approach to the Evolution of Rhythms in a Society of Software Agents

We are developing RGeme (Rhythmic Meme Generator), an artificial intelligence system for the composition of rhythmic streams inspired by Richard Dawkin's theory of memes. The system is based on intelligent agents that learn from examples and interact by generating rhythms. The system has two broad stages. In the first one, the learning stage, which is the main focus of this paper, Agents are tr...

Evolving Musical Counterpoint

Musical counterpoint, a musical technique in which two or more independent melodies are played simultaneously with the goal of creating harmony, has been around since the baroque era. However, to our knowledge computational generation of aesthetically pleasing linear counterpoint based on subjective fitness assessment has not been explored by the evolutionary computation community (although gen...

Perception of Rhythmic Similarity is Asymmetrical, and Is Influenced by Musical Training, Expressive Performance, and Musical Context

Rhythm is an essential part of the structure, behaviour, and aesthetics of music. However, the cognitive processing that underlies the perception of musical rhythm is not fully understood. In this study, we tested whether rhythm perception is influenced by three factors: musical training, the presence of expressive performance cues in human-performed music, and the broader musical context. We c...
